The foremost reason for fixed assignment was hardware limitation that restricted the receiver from operating on multiple or very wide frequency band. CR, based on SDR, significantly reduces the hardware dependency and thereby allows devices to operate on wide range of frequency bands by hopping from one band to another. It gives the devices an option to operate on different frequency band opportunistically depending on availability. However, to know whether the channel is free for use or not, the device must be either capable of sensing the presence of others presence or there should be some sort of coordination between users to share the information. In both cases there exists a variety of research challenges to address. Furthermore, the division of users into two groups with distinct set of preferences and policies, means RA research has an entirely new dimension.
